Trump to nominate Georgia Rep. Tom Price as health secretary

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Georgia Representative Tom Price, as the head of the Department of Health and Human Services, according to a person familiar with the decision.

Mr. Price was a leading critic of President Barack Obama's sweeping health care law. If Senate confirmed, Price will play a central role in Republican efforts to repeal and replace the current health care law.

Vice-President-elect Mike Pence said on Monday, that, “I look forward to being back at it first thing in the morning and there will be a number of very important announcements tomorrow.”

The 62-year-old Price is a six-term congressman and orthopedic surgeon. He has chaired the House Budget Committee for the past two years.

A bookish conservative from the Atlanta suburbs, Price has worked closely with House Speaker Ryan to assemble GOP budgets aimed at reducing the annual deficit.

Earlier, Price had said whatever Republicans do to replace Obama's health care law will bear a "significant resemblance" to a 2015 measure which was vetoed by the president. That bill would have gutted some main features of the health care law, subsidies to help middle-class Americans buy private policies, medicaid expansion, the tax penalties for individuals who refused to get coverage and several taxes to support coverage expansion.
