The Delta variant which is called SARS-CoV-2 has now mutated further into Delta plus or the AY.1 variant. The delta variant was first identified in India. As per Public Health England, 63 genomes of Delta (B.1.617.2) with the new K417N mutation have been identified so far. As per the update, the Delta plus is present in six genomes. Delta plus is said to infect human cells. As of now, Delta plus is not present in India and the sequences are found in Europe, America, and Asia. Delta plus was found in Europe during the early days of March. Delta plus is said to be resistant to the monoclonal antibody cocktail treatment for coronavirus.

The research shows that there are two groups of K417N: one of them is internationally distributed and the other one is found on the genome sequences. There are 36 cases of the new variant reported across the globe. The government of Maharashtra sent several samples from various districts for testing if the Delta plus variant is present in the state. The reports are expected to arrive soon. The research is currently on about the Delta plus and it is not known if it is more transmissible than the previous variants. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL) is studying about the new samples if there are traces of Delta plus variant.
