US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he is taking legal action against the American newspaper The New York Times for its reports about him over many years. He stated that he is filing a defamation lawsuit worth $15 billion against the paper, which he described as a "virtual mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party" and accused of running a long-term "campaign of lies" against him. "Today, I have the great privilege of suing The New York Times for $15 billion, one of the most terrible newspapers in our nation's history, which has become a virtual 'mouthpiece' for the Radical Left Democrats," Trump said in a post on X. The Republican noted that the newspaper's alleged support of Kamala Harris, his opponent in the presidential race, which he claimed was highlighted on the front page, represented "the largest illegal campaign contribution ever."
He also charged that the outlet has spread untrue information about him, his family, his business, and the America First and Make America Great Again movements, as well as the country in general. Comparing the Times' reporting to that of other liberal American media like ABC and CBS, Trump claimed these organizations have "engaged" in a long-standing pattern of wrongdoing that is both unacceptable and illegal. "I take pride in holding this once-respected 'publication' accountable, as we have done with the Fake News Networks such as our successful lawsuits against George Slopadopoulos/ABC/Disney and 60 Minutes/CBS/Paramount, who were aware that they were falsely 'attacking' me through a very complicated process of altering documents and visuals, which was truly a harmful kind of defamation, and therefore they settled for historical sums," he stated. Further criticizing the Times, Trump alleged that the US newspaper has been allowed to "lie and defame me freely for far too long."
"They have engaged in this long-term pattern of abuse, which is both unacceptable and illegal. The New York Times has had the freedom to lie, attack, and defame me for far too long, and that ends now! The lawsuit will be filed in the great state of Florida. Thank you for paying attention to this issue. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
