Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved a significant political achievement on Wednesday as he became the longest-serving Prime Minister in India since the Constitution was enacted. To celebrate this milestone, he shared his thoughts on the importance of public service, humility, and responsibility, stating these values are essential for good governance. Since he began his term on May 26, 2014, Modi has served for 4,399 days without interruption as Prime Minister, surpassing the previous record held by Jawaharlal Nehru, who was in office for 4,398 consecutive days starting from India's first general elections in 1952.
In a post on X, Modi expressed that earning the public's trust requires selfless dedication to serving the people.
"Good governance is measured by public service. Only those who work diligently with humility, dedication, and a sense of responsibility earn the people's trust," Modi stated. Referring to a Sanskrit saying about leadership, he emphasized that leaders must be devoted to the well-being of citizens and rule with humility. "One who is naturally devoted to the welfare of his people. A humble king indeed achieves the highest honor," he mentioned. Leaders from the National Democratic Alliance have sent their congratulations to the Prime Minister. Union Home Minister Amit Shah remarked that the 12 years of PM Modi's leadership "have focused on restoring India's honor, cultural revival, and liberating the country from a mindset of servitude. "
In an article for India Today, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that PM Modi has provided the people with not only programs and schemes but also a clear aim, a wide vision, and a national determination filled with assurance. "This moment is not just about tallying achievements but about recognizing the total transformation that has built citizens’ trust in India's abilities," he wrote. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recognized PM Modi as a "tireless worker" inspired by the motto "Nation First," noting his unwavering commitment to India's advancement, dedication to the people's welfare, and transformative leadership for the country. Meanwhile, international leaders have also celebrated the Prime Minister's achievement.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was among those offering praise, acknowledging the Indian leader's significant impact on the nation's rise on the global stage. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also commended Modi's long political career. Ambassador Gor tweeted, "Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister. This milestone is a strong testament to his years of committed public service and leadership! Wishing him all the best".
