Triumph Motorcycles has announced a new 350cc version of its mid-size bike range in India. This is a smart decision to take advantage of the lower 18 percent GST tax, making the bikes more accessible. Although the engine size has been reduced, the company has kept the ‘400’ name across the models. This launch follows Triumph reaching the important milestone of selling over 100,000 motorcycles in India, showing the strong interest in its modern classic bikes in the country. The updated lineup features a new 349cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. The engine size was reduced by shortening the stroke from 64mm to 56.1mm, while the bore size remains the same at 89mm from the previous 398.15cc engine.
The Speed T4 now generates 29bhp at 7,500rpm and 31Nm at 5,500rpm, down from 31bhp and 36Nm previously. The Speed 400, Scrambler 400, and Scrambler 400 XC now produce 37bhp at 8,500rpm and 32Nm at 7,000rpm, reduced from 40bhp and 37.5Nm. The highest model, the Thruxton 400, along with the newly released Tracker 400, can produce 40bhp at 8,750rpm and 32Nm at 7,500rpm. A notable addition is the Tracker 400, a new option placed between the Speed 400 and Scrambler series. Unlike the versions available abroad, the Indian version uses the same 350cc engine. The updated lineup now includes six models, with prices made more attractive by the lower tax rate:
Triumph Speed T4 — Rs 1.95 lakh
Triumph Speed 400 — Rs 2.32 lakh
Triumph Tracker 400 — Rs 2.46 lakh
Triumph Scrambler 400 — Rs 2.59 lakh
Triumph Thruxton 400 — Rs 2.66 lakh
Triumph Scrambler 400 XC — Rs 2.90 lakh
Switching to a 350cc engine allows Triumph to take advantage of the 18 percent GST rate, offering savings of up to Rs 21,500 for buyers. This pricing approach is likely to be very important in helping the brand reach more customers, especially first-time buyers of premium motorcycles.
