The match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 did not attract much excitement from the cricket perspective since Suryakumar Yadav's team completely dominated their rivals on Sunday. Nevertheless, the choice made by India's captain Suryakumar to skip handshakes with Pakistan's captain Salman Ali Agha and the other players from the opposing team became a significant discussion topic. There were no handshakes exchanged between the two teams. Even when the Pakistani players approached the Indian dressing area, the doors were firmly closed on them. Later, during the presentation ceremony and press conference, Suryakumar was asked about the handshake omission and mentioned that this action was meant to convey a message to Pakistan, considering the Pahalgam terror incident. However, the captain wasn’t the one who initially suggested this move.
According to a report, it was the head coach Gautam Gambhir who thought of the handshake avoidance. Gambhir allegedly instructed the Indian players not to engage in handshakes with the Pakistani players and also advised them to avoid any conversations with their rivals, as stated in a report by Telecom Asia Sport. Discussions about a potential 'boycott' leading up to the match had even reached the Indian dressing room, resulting in players like Suryakumar approaching Gambhir and other support staff to express their worries. Gambhir reportedly advised the players to reduce their social media use and concentrate solely on the game. “Limit your time on social media, ignore the distractions. Your role is to represent India. Keep in mind what occurred in Pahalgam. No handshakes, no interaction—just go out, give your best, and win for India,” Gambhir reportedly said.
Gambhir also communicated with the Asia Cup 2025 broadcaster in India about the match, supporting Suryakumar's sentiments on the significance of the no-handshake stance. “Great victory. There is still plenty of cricket to play in this tournament. This game was crucial as we aimed to stand in solidarity with the victims and their families affected by the Pahalgam attack. Most importantly, we want to express our gratitude to the Indian army for their successful Operation Sindoor. We will strive to make our country proud and joyful.” The matchup on Sunday wasn't the only time India and Pakistan faced off in the Asia Cup 2025. The two teams may confront each other again in the Super 4 round, and a clash in the tournament final is also possible.
