On Tuesday, Sundar Pichai, the head of Google, mentioned he had a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the plans for the company's first AI center in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Google revealed its plans for a large data center and an AI facility in Visakhapatnam, which is the biggest AI center they have set up outside the United States. They also announced an investment of 15 billion dollars in India over the next five years. Pichai, who originally hails from India, described this as a "major development," stating that the hub will feature gigawatt-scale computing power, a new underwater international connection, and extensive energy facilities. He shared on X that this will help bring their top-tier technology to businesses and users in India, speeding up AI progress and fostering growth throughout the nation, shortly after the agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government was finalized.
Google is working together with the Adani Group to create the AI data center. This is the largest investment Google has ever made in India. The company mentioned that this is in line with the Indian Government’s vision for Viksit Bharat 2047, aimed at boosting AI-based services. “This project will create significant economic and social opportunities for both India and the United States while leading a major shift in AI capabilities,” they stated. At a signing event in Delhi, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian stated that the Visakhapatnam AI hub signifies a "pivotal investment in the digital future of India." He said that by providing top-notch AI infrastructure on a large scale, they are helping businesses to innovate more quickly and creating important opportunities for inclusive growth. He emphasized that this partnership shows a mutual dedication to responsibly utilizing AI and making a positive impact on society, supported by both the Indian and US governments.

The event included attendees such as Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Ashwini Vaishnaw, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and state IT Minister Nara Lokesh. Vaishnaw expressed gratitude to Google for its investment, noting that "This digital infrastructure will significantly help achieve the goals of our India AI vision." He added, "AI services are coming up as a completely new area in our digital economy, and we anticipate this new facility being used to train our youth for AI jobs." Naidu mentioned that this investment in Andhra Pradesh signals a "new chapter" in India’s journey towards digital change. He expressed pride in hosting India’s first true gigawatt-scale data center and Google's first AI center in the country, highlighting their joint commitment to innovation, AI adoption, and long-term assistance for businesses and startups in the state.
This announcement occurs amidst increasing competition among technology companies, which are investing heavily to create new data centers to satisfy the rising demand for AI services. Microsoft and Amazon have already devoted billions to establish data centers in India, which is expected to have over 900 million internet users by the end of the year.
